Meet Graham
He’s come on leaps and bounds. He's come out of himself, out of his shell, he gets a bit cheeky now which he never used to before. He is so happy and so self assured.
Jean, Graham’s mum
Graham had spent a number of years of his adult life living in a hospital environment, where he slept on a ward and had little privacy or independence. He later moved into a bungalow on the hospital grounds but was still expected to share his new home with 6 other people, none of whom he had chosen to live with. Activities remained limited for Graham and he wasn't able to easily get out into his community.
When Affinity Trust took over Graham's support, we assisted to him move into a bungalow of his own in a quiet residential area. Since then, Graham's confidence has greatly improved and he now has a very active life. He recently completed a cooking course at college and now attends a dance, music and drama group. He also plays five-a-side football every week and recently purchased his own car, of which he is very proud.
Graham also takes part in a local community project that enables him to have horse riding lessons. This activity has led to Graham helping out at the stables and he is a valued member of the team. The project also has a large small holding/allotment and Graham, who enjoys spending time in his own garden, will be getting involved with this in the future. As well as the work at the stables, Graham has a voluntary part-time job at a local library.
One of the most rewarding experiences of moving into supported living for Graham was being able to invite his mother to his home for Christmas day. To have her there for the whole day and be able to prepare a meal for her was a wonderful experience for Graham and something he was very proud to be able to do.
