For over 10 years, Mary lived in a variety of residential care homes which she and her mum felt did not meet her needs. Three years ago, Affinity Trust began supporting Mary to live independently in her own home, providing one-to-one support.
Life is very different for Mary now. She is in control of making decisions about her life and what she wants to do. The biggest change is that Mary now lives in her own home and is in charge of managing her own money, including paying her rent and bills. She has regained some of her confidence and has improved her skills in tasks such as cooking – spaghetti bolognese is her favourite dish to prepare – as well as shopping, cleaning and gardening.
Since moving out of residential care, Mary has made positive progress in her life. At times, Mary used to feel quite anxious but, now that she has a consistent and personalised support team, she feels much calmer and more relaxed.
Mary enjoys getting out and about. With the help of her support team, she can use to bus and likes to plan trips. Whether this is just going out for coffee, or visiting car boot sale, or going on a special day trip, Mary relishes her independence.
